The Cut tool removes an area from a field or parcel, such as a building site, and turns it into its own field. It works best for areas that start and end on a border — either the same border, or opposite sides of the field or parcel.
The Cut tool can be used on either parcels or fields. If you use it on a parcel, you will likely lose the link to the county assessor and the parcel ID used as the parcel’s name. We recommend making cuts on fields.

Using the Cut Tool

You can make cuts while you’re adding a property to your account, or after the farm has been created.

If You’re Adding a Property to Your Account

1
With your parcels selected in the Farm Builder, click Next
2
On the Create Fields step, click Start Fields from Parcels

If You’re Editing an Existing Property in Your Account

1
Navigate to the property you want to edit
2
Click on Fields & Parcels, then click Add/Edit Fields

Cutting an Area From a Field

1
In the upper right, click Map Tools
2
Click on the field you want to edit. The Cut tool (the fourth icon under Map Tools) is only enabled once a field is selected.
3
Click Cut
4
Start outside the border of the field: click once to drop your first point, then continue clicking to outline the area you want to remove
5
Finish outside the border of the field by double-clicking. The area you outlined becomes a new field, and its acres are subtracted from the original field.
6
Click Next to go to Edit Field Details. For the new field, update the Name (for example, “Site”)
7
Under Advanced Acres Breakdown, move the acres to the right category. For a building site, copy the acres from Dryland into Site Acres under Non-production Designated Acres
8
Continue through the Farm Builder and save your farm
