# CarPlay

> Run CamoAg on the car screen: the Explore grid, nearby lists, voice search, map layers, and turn-by-turn navigation.

Connect your iPhone to a CarPlay-equipped vehicle and CamoAg appears on the car
screen as a full map you can drive from. Everything is reachable in one or two
taps, and anything you can't tap for safely — like typing — falls back to voice.

## The map screen

When CamoAg opens in the car you land on the browsing map, showing the same data
layers you have turned on in the phone app.

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Explore" icon="grid-2">
    Top-left of the navigation bar. Opens the Explore grid described below. It
    stays available while you're navigating, so you can look something up
    without ending the route.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Recenter" icon="crosshairs">
    Snaps the map back to your location after you've panned away.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Pan" icon="up-down-left-right">
    Puts the map in panning mode so the car's controls move the map. Tap it
    again — or use the on-screen dismiss control — to return to normal.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Zoom + / −" icon="magnifying-glass-plus">
    Steps the zoom level in and out.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

While a route is running, an **Exit** button appears at the top right to cancel
navigation, and CamoAg shows an arrival alert when you reach the destination.

## Explore

**Explore** is the hub. Tapping it opens a grid of eight buttons:

<Frame caption="The Explore grid in CarPlay — Contacts, Operations, Farms and Parcels on the top row; Recents, Layers, Search and Settings on the bottom.">
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/camoag/sSrJS5mSWoiKe2cv/images/ios/carplay-explore-grid.svg?fit=max&auto=format&n=sSrJS5mSWoiKe2cv&q=85&s=97badea56cf063a3b1f60bb331f6f0e6" alt="CarPlay Explore screen showing an eight-button grid: Contacts, Operations, Farms, Parcels, Recents, Layers, Search, and Settings" width="1000" height="600" data-path="images/ios/carplay-explore-grid.svg" />
</Frame>

The first four buttons are the **Nearby** lists. Each one searches a half-mile
box around your current location, and if nothing turns up there it widens the
search automatically — to four miles for contacts, operations, and farms, and to
one mile for parcels. Results come back sorted nearest-first, and the list
appears immediately with a "Loading…" state while the search runs.

<Note>
  Nearby lists need a location fix. If CamoAg can't determine where you are, it
  shows an alert on the car screen instead of an empty list.

### Contacts

Lists the CRM contacts nearest to you, each row showing the contact's name and
address. Customer contacts and prospects carry different icons so you can tell
them apart at a glance.

Tapping a row opens the contact card with:

* **Call** — dials the contact's primary phone, when they have one.
* **Directions** — routes to their primary address. Contacts whose only address
  is a PO box don't get a Directions button, since there's nowhere to drive.

See [Contacts](/ios/contacts) for the full contact record on the phone.

### Operations

Lists the farm operations nearest to you. The card shows the operation name, its
category, whether it's **Saved** to your organization or still an unsaved CamoAg
operation, and its primary address.

* **Contacts** — opens the contacts tied to that operation; tap one to open its
  card.
* **Save** — appears only for unsaved operations, and mirrors **Save to Edit**
  in the phone app: it copies the operation into your organization so you can
  edit it.
* **Directions** — routes to the operation's primary address.

See [Operations](/ios/operations) for more.

### Farms

Lists your nearest saved farms. The card shows the farm name, its coordinates,
county and state, the number of parcels in it, and gross acres, with
**Directions** routing to the center of the farm.

See [Farms](/ios/farms) for more.

### Parcels

Lists the parcels nearest to you. The card shows the parcel's display name,
coordinates, county and state, and gross acres.

The parcel card offers one of two buttons depending on what CamoAg finds:

* **Contacts** — when the parcel's address already has contacts attached, this
  opens them.
* **Save Contact** — when it doesn't, this creates a prospect contact from the
  parcel owner, the same as **Save as a Contact** on the phone. It requires
  permission to edit contacts.

See [Parcels](/ios/parcels) for more.

### Recents

Everything you open — on the phone or in the car — lands in **Recents**, so
picking up where you left off doesn't mean searching again. Each row shows the
record's name and a short subtitle, and tapping it reopens the detail card.

If you haven't viewed anything yet, the screen reads *"No Recents — Items you
view will appear here."*

### Search

**Search** looks across contacts, operations, farms, and parcels at once.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose Type or Speak">
    CamoAg offers both when the car allows it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="While driving, CamoAg goes straight to voice">
    Most vehicles lock out the CarPlay keyboard in motion, so CamoAg skips the
    chooser and starts listening. If the car locks the keyboard while the
    chooser is already open, the **Type** option disappears on its own.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Speak your search">
    A "Listening…" screen appears and transcribes on-device. It stops on its own
    after a short pause in speech, then runs the search.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Results come back grouped by type — Contacts, Operations, Farms, Parcels — with
the two closest matches in each group. Groups with no matches are left out.

### Layers

**Layers** is the CarPlay version of the map filters on your phone, split into
two sections.

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Data Layers" icon="toggle-on">
    Toggle **Contacts**, **Parcels**, **Operations**, and **Farms** on or off.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Base Layer" icon="map">
    Pick one: **Hybrid**, **NAIP**, **Road**, **Light**, **Dark**, or
    **Satellite**. A check marks the active one.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

Changes take effect on the car map immediately and stay in sync with the phone.

</Frame>

### Settings

Two toggles, both of which take effect right away:

* **Orientation → North Always Up** — on keeps north at the top of the map; off
  rotates the map to the direction you're driving. This is the same preference
  as **Default Compass Behavior** in the phone app's
  [Settings](/ios/getting-started#face-my-direction-vs-face-north).
* **Audio Settings → Mute Voice Directions** — silences spoken turn-by-turn
  guidance without ending the route.

</Frame>

## Getting directions

Tap **Directions** on any detail card and CamoAg cancels whatever route is
running, returns to the map, and previews the new route before starting
turn-by-turn guidance.

<Note>
  Directions started from a CarPlay card always use CamoAg's own navigation,
  even if your **Default Directions App** is set to Apple Maps or Google Maps.
</Note>
